The 2008 Brady Awards
Onondaga Community Service Recipient of the Year Award

Kirby Dar Dar

This year’s Community Service Award is awarded to Kirby Dar Dar for his exemplary commitment to the youth of our community.  Kirby is well-known in Central New York for his exploits on the football field, but he has become well-known for his community service efforts off the field, as well.
Born in Louisiana and raised in Tampa, Kirby first came to the Syracuse area as a running back for the Syracuse University Orangemen.  After winning over the hearts of S.U. fans, he went on to play professional football for the Miami Dolphins.  Kirby and his wife, Nanette, returned to Syracuse to raise their four children, and he decided that he needed to find a way to give back to the community that had so heartily embraced him.
Kirby chose to show his appreciation to the fans that had supported him by working with disadvantaged youth.  For the past two years, he has sponsored the Kirby Dar Dar Football Camp in conjunction with Catholic Charities and the “Kids Win!” initiative.  The camp is free to boys and girls aged eight to eighteen; the only criterion is a grade point average of at least a “C.”  Inspired by his mother’s emphasis on education, Kirby incorporates much more than football into the agenda.  The camp is designed to help at-risk youth build relationships with positive adult role models, and includes lectures on education, nutrition, and citizenship.  In addition to the camp activities, the 300 participants also receive free t-shirts, sneakers, and school supplies.
Kirby’s volunteer activities do not end with his own football camp.  He also assists with other football camps run by former players such as Robert Drummond, and is involved with the Dunbar Center, the Boys and Girls Clubs, and Pop Warner football.  He is a member of Catholic Charities Board of Directors, the “Kids Win!” Board of Directors, and the Syracuse University Athletics Board of Directors.  Off the field, Kirby is a business development specialist.
Central New York is fortunate to have such a passionate advocate for youth.  Thank you, Kirby, for sharing your time and talent with our kids.
