KIRBY DAR DAR FOOTBALL CAMP
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Local children are learning all about football from some of the top athletes around, but they also may be learning a more important lesson.
Former SU and Miami Dolphin player Kirby Dar Dar host his 4th annaul football camp Friday and Saturday.
Kids as young as six are learning life lessons.
Every football camp has drills, agility tests and plays. They all teach sportsmanship, teamwork and skills. But Dar Dar's camp stresses something else above all:
“It's very important for kids who do well in school. That's the number one criteria to be here at football camp,” Dar Dar says.
To participate, kids must bring a report card in.
“Before camp, he talks about school work, and we have to get our work really good,” says Alex Strong, an eighth grader at Roberts School.
It's a message the participants remember all school year. If they want to come back, they have to have the grades.
“I always stress myself to get good grades - study hard for final exams,” Strong says.
For kids who excel, there's special recognition.
“Last year I had a 92 average -- they ask you to bring your report cards in, and whoever got the best card they sent pencils, pens and notebooks,” says West Genesee eighth grader Naesean Howard.
Kids who are struggling sign a waiver, promising they'll work harder.
“Each semester they'll fax their report card, adding mentorship I'm doing throughout the school year to promote these kids to be successful in school,” says Dar Dar.
The Kirby Dar Dar football camp continues Saturday morning at 9:00 at Henninger High School's football field. It's free and open to kids between six and 18 years old.
The coaches are current SU football players and members of the Syracuse Shock.
